Button holes
There are 5 buttonholes on the top of this back, worked into one short edge of the large rectangular piece. On one side only you will place the button holes, measuring from the end mark the button holes at 6 inches, 8 inches, 10 1/8 inches, 12 ¼ inches and 14 ¼ inches. Sew them in length to correspond with your button size. |
The handles are formed by folding the two 3 x 14" pieces lengthwise in half, and sewing with a half inch seam along the edge.
Turn these tubes right side out (I use a very large safety pin)
then fold in half an inch on each end and press flat
with the seam in the middle of the tube.
If you have used a soft fabric, you may want to interline these handles with canvas or buckram to give them more support.
I found with using a heavy drill/denim type cloth that this was not necessary.
On the bag shown, I bound the long edges of the handles with the same twill tape that I used to decorate the bag, and down the top of the handles (the side without the seam) I put a row of feather stitching.
